I just bought an adapter and HDMI cable so I could hook my MacBook up to the HD TV set in my mountain cabin and it looks great, but there’s no sound! Do I need a separate sound cable for this to work? I thought that HDMI could handle audio and video?
How old is your MacBook? If you have one that’s too old, it turns out that it might not be able to push audio through your DisplayPort, in which case the HDMI adapter isn’t going to be able to perform miracles, sorry to say. It’s about mid-2008 that the Apple hardware started to support HDMI audio, based on the research I’ve done, and there’s a pretty easy way to find out if your particular device works or not.
Before we do that, however, odds are that the problem is much simpler: your Mac probably just isn’t configured to use the HDMI adapter as the audio output for your system when you have things plugged in. Switch that and *poof* you’re good to go!
Let’s start there and then if it’s still not working, I’ll show you what to look for in your hardware configuration app to check your HDMI / Display Port capabilities.
I’ll start with a frame from a movie trailer (can you identify it for two points?)
It all looks good, but the audio is coming out of my computer even as the video is being fed to the HDTV.
To switch it, choose System Preferences off the Apple menu, then look for “Sound”:
The default audio output is “Internal Speakers”, so it’s no surprise that while we’re seeing the video on the TV, the audio is still being piped out of my MacBook Pro speakers. See the second choice down, however? That’s what we want, for the Samsung HDTV we’ve plugged into:
I click on “Samsung” and get an interesting warning message at the bottom:
“The selected device has no output controls”. Sounds ominous, but it’s not actually. It just means that I’ll have to adjust the volume on the TV itself rather than on the computer.
Once I’ve switched the output audio, it should automatically be feeding audio to the TV so a quick test with the movie trailer should work great, audio and video both. Easy once you realize that it’s not an automatic switcher.
Now, if it’s still not working, launch the “System Information” application that you’ll find in “Applications” > “Utilities”. Look for your Audio (Built In) and make sure that there’s an HDMI / DIsplayPort Output option, like so:
Mine’s ready to go, as you can see. If yours doesn’t show this then you might have an older MacBook or other Apple Mac product and might then need to have a separate audio cable hooked up to your TV. No worries, it’s easy to do and the back of your TV probably has a dual RCA-style “audio in” jack you can use with a simple audio splitter from Radio Shack or similar to accomplish the same goal. Not quite as neat and simple, but the end result’s worth the hassle, I promise you!
Let’s Stay In Touch!

Also update or re-install the driver.
Control Panel - Device Manager - SOUNDS - look for HD Audio - Mine says RealTek High Definition
Audio (that is an example and yours may have an entirely different name/maker).
Write down description make and model - double click on it - drivers tab - write down version. Now
Click UPdate Drivers which may not do anything as MS is far behind certifying drivers. Then RIGHT
CLICK on it and UNINSTALL - REBOOT - this will rebuild the driver stack.
1st go to system maker's site and look for latest driver Download - SAVE - go to right click on and
RUN AS ADMIN (This is your fallback.) REBOOT after each driver installation.
NOTE : Sound drivers often rollback so check the version after installation and the reboot to
see if the version you installed is there, if not repeat the install - reboot until it is. It can take
several tries depending on how many rollbacks it does.
Then do same for Device Maker's site.
Manually look at manufacturer's sites for drivers - and Device Maker's sites.

Hope this helps.
When the device is highlighted it shows a message (under settings for the selected device) that states.. The selected device has no output controls.
I have no idea where they have gone. The volume control slider, in the menu bar, cannot be moved. Everything else seems to be normal. The input side shows the internal microphone to be working.
I noted on the interweb that other people with intel macs had possibly related issues around the sound devices. Some suggestions.. of running Garage Band had felt it had fixed a myriad of sound issues.
I ran Garage Band without success. Reboot revealed that the startup chime has also disappeared. Mac OS X 10.5.7 and an iMac 24in +3.06 GHz with Intel Core 2 duo and 4GB RAM.
edited to add the following:
System prefs trashed and PRAM reset - no improvement although PRAM reset provided a startup chime so the output must be working.
What is the next step. The machine is till under warranty but it feels to me as if this may be an issue of a system preference that has become unset.
Would there be any value to trashing the system prefs files and rebooting?
| I am banging my head against the wall with this one. I run a powermac using the latest Yosemite 10 but I can't properly interface my firestudio as the software simply crashes. I can only monitor in mono. If I plug in my headphones direct to the mac I get wonderful stereo. I have had nothing but trouble with the presonus since I got it. Studio One 2 wont run on this computer either So I went Logic Pro instead. That works fine. Is there a compatability problem with Universal Control and Apple or Yosemite?? It's driving me nuts Thank you |
